Program in Sociology ，Comparative Historical Sociology ，The Sociology of Max Weber ，Inequality and Social Stratification ，Political Sociology讲座概要：In this presentation, I will address the recent debate about Karl Jaspers’ idea of an “axial age,” during which several of the world’s major religious traditions were founded, and which Jaspers saw as the occasion when “man as we know him today” came into being. I argue that Jaspers’ emphasis on the commonalities of the major traditions (Buddhism, Greek philosophy, Jewish prophecy, and Confucianism) was at odds with Weber’s understanding of these matters, which stressed their differences.
